Block printing/batik/printing
The lightweight cotton fabrics are produced using hand-carved wooden stamps and are actually small works of art. Multicoloured fabrics are elaborately printed in several passes using a set of positive and negative stamps.
Batik printing in India is done in the traditional way using a wax-resistant printing technique. The three-dimensional effect is created by the wax on the fabric cracking slightly, allowing a little colour to penetrate the fabric under the wax layer.
